A Letter From Mari
A letter from our founder
I grew up with this soap in Japan. What is sold here under the same name is not the same thing.
My name is Mari Tanaka and I make Kakiyu. Before you buy another persimmon bar, from us or anyone else, let me show you what I check. Very little of what reaches an American bathroom is the bar I grew up with.

Four days in that house, and I could not find a single way to say it.
A few years ago I flew home to Japan to see my mother. Within a day of being back in the house, I noticed it.
That smell. Not unclean. My mother showers every day of her life. She irons things that do not need ironing. It was something else, something I recognised but could not name.
So I said nothing. Not out of kindness. I just could not find a way to raise it that would not hurt her, and I felt terrible the whole time.

My grandmother was the one who said it out loud
She was eighty-seven, lived twenty minutes away, and came from the generation that simply says things. I told her, mostly because it had been sitting on me all week.
She was not surprised at all. She used the ordinary word for it: karēshū (加齢臭), "aging smell". In Japan this has a name, and everybody past a certain age knows it.
Then she went into her bathroom and came back with a bar of soap.
"Leave it in her bathroom," she said. "Don't say anything. She'll know."

It had been sitting on that ledge for as long as I could remember.
And I stood there holding it, and realised I had been looking at that soap my entire childhood.
Dark, a little austere. I must have walked past it ten thousand times and never once wondered what it was for.
It is called kakishibu (柿渋), fermented persimmon tannin. Unripe persimmons are pressed and left to ferment for months, until you have a dark, nearly black liquid. In Mino, in Gifu, where I grew up, it has been used for centuries on paper, wood and skin. Nobody there would call it a product.
I did exactly what she said. I left the bar in my mother's bathroom, said nothing, and flew back to Seattle.
She has used it every day since. She has never mentioned why. Neither have I.

Then a friend asked me about her own mother
A few months later, a friend here brought it up with me, awkwardly, half apologising. She had noticed it on her own mother. She had no idea how to raise it, or even what it was.
I knew exactly where she was standing. I had stood there myself that spring.
I still had two bars in my suitcase. I gave her one and repeated my grandmother's words. Leave it in the bathroom. Don't say anything. She'll know.
It worked. She told somebody. Soon women I had never met were asking me for it. And when I went looking to buy more here, I found out two things.

The first is how many women are living with this and have no idea what it is.
Nobody told them. Most decided it was a hygiene failure, and were showering two and three times a day to scrub off something that is not on the surface of the skin at all.
The second is that the bar I wanted to hand them is not sold here. Not really. A bar made with concentrated fermented extract and a bar made with juice and orange dye can print the same two words, in the same size type, on the front of the box. Both are perfectly legal.

Which is why I ended up making it myself
When a cheap bar does nothing, you do not conclude the bar was cheap. You conclude persimmon soap does not work.
That is what bothers me. Women who tried it, got a dyed fruit-scented bar, felt nothing after three weeks, and quietly gave up on the one thing that would have helped.
So I had it made properly. The persimmons still come from Japan, and Kakiyu is made with the kakishibu method they have used in Mino for centuries: the real fermented extract, at the concentration it is meant to be, not a trace dropped in so the word can go on the box.
It is made in small batches because it has to be. Astringent persimmons ripen once a year, and there is only as much extract as the harvest gives. That is also why we sometimes run out, and I would rather say so plainly.

But do not take my word for any of it
Here are the six things I check instead. Most take under a minute. One takes ten seconds. Run them on our bar as happily as on anyone else's. That is the point.
The six checks, at a glance
- Where you actually bought it
- Whether the real active is named on the panel, and how much of it there is
- Whether light passes through the bar
- What it does to a white cloth
- What it weighs
- Whether the price is arithmetically possible

Where you actually bought it
The ten-second one. It settles more cases than the other five combined.
Kakiyu is sold in exactly one place: our own store. No marketplaces, no resellers, no third-party sellers. If your bar came from anywhere else, it is not our soap, however close the wrapper looks.
Open your order confirmation and read the seller line, not the product title. The title is the easiest thing in the world to copy.
If it came from anywhere but our store, you can stop here.

Read the panel, then ask how much
Everything that matters is printed in the smallest type on the box.
Turn the box over. You are looking for kakishibu, or fermented persimmon tannin. If it says "persimmon fruit extract", "fragrance" or "parfum", or there is no list at all, you have your answer.
If it is there, you are only halfway. The next question is the one almost nobody asks.
How much of it is in there?
Real kakishibu is expensive: one harvest a year, pressed unripe, fermented for months. So a common move is to add a token amount, name it truthfully on the panel, and let the label do the work. Everything on the box is accurate. The bar still does nothing.
So ask. A brand with a real concentration will give you the number straight away. The ones that change the subject have answered you.
Ours is a kakishibu extract tested at over 90% tannin, named on the panel, with exactly three other ingredients: shea butter, olive fruit oil and glycerin. They are there because tannin is astringent, and without them a persimmon bar dries you out. That is why so many cheap ones leave people itching.

Hold it up to the window
Left: light passes through, and you can see the bubbles. Right: it stops dead. Same two words on both boxes.
My favourite. Four seconds, and you cannot argue with the result.
Hold the bar up against the daylight.
A real glycerin bar is translucent. Light passes through and it glows amber, like honey held to a lamp, usually with small bubbles inside. Glycerin is what holds moisture in your skin while the tannin lifts the odour off it.
A cheap bar is opaque: ordinary soap base with orange dye stirred in. Light hits it and stops.
Do not judge the shade. Judge whether anything gets through. If no light passes, you are holding dyed soap base, built to look like persimmon rather than work like it.

Wet it and rub it on a white cloth
Colourant has to go somewhere. Usually the washcloth first, then the dish, then the towels.
Wet the bar and rub it a few times on a white cloth.
If orange comes off, that is added dye, and it will keep coming off for the life of the bar. It is the most common complaint on the cheap listings: orange residue on soap dishes, orange runoff in the shower, colour on towels that does not wash out.
That dye is also sitting on your skin twice a day. If your skin has become more reactive since menopause, as it has for a great many women, that is worth knowing.
A bar should clean the cloth, not colour it.

Put it on the kitchen scale
Thirty seconds, and it changes what you thought you paid.
Nobody thinks to do this one.
Listings advertise the number of bars, not their size. Many come in well under what you would assume. That is how a "three-pack" ends up costing more per wash than one full bar, and why so many reviews say it was half gone after two showers.
Kakiyu is 100g. Weigh yours. If it is much lighter, work out the price per gram, and the bargain usually disappears.

Do the arithmetic on the price
No bar needed for this one.
I have stood in the rooms in Mino where kakishibu is made. The persimmons ripen once a year, are pressed unripe, then ferment for months. It is not a cheap input, and there is only so much of it each year.
Now picture two bars for ten dollars, in stock all year, in unlimited quantity.
Something has to give, and it is always the extract. It gets swapped for a splash of juice, orange dye and a fragrance oil that smells the way people expect persimmon to smell.
If the price seems impossible for a fermented, harvest-limited ingredient, that is because it is. You are not being offered a bargain on the same thing. You are being offered a different thing.

What a cheap bar actually costs you
Not the ten dollars.
It costs you three months, and the belief that anything works.
You use it faithfully. Nothing changes, because a trace of juice was never going to change anything. Around week four you stop, and file persimmon soap next to the deodorants and body washes that did not work either.
Then you go back to checking yourself before you hug anyone.
That is the real damage. I would genuinely rather you ran these checks on someone else's bar and it passed, than have you write the whole idea off because of a bar that was never really persimmon soap.

Why we only sell in one place
People ask why we are not on the marketplaces. Next to forty near-identical orange bars, the only thing anyone can compare is price. We would lose that fight on purpose, because our ingredient costs what it costs.
So the arrangement is simple. One store, and these are the terms:
- Kakishibu extract tested at over 90% tannin, named on the panel, confirmed by our supplier’s certificate of analysis
- A full 100g bar, Japanese kakishibu method
- Four ingredients: the tannin that does the work, and three that keep it from drying your skin
- 100% back within 60 days. No forms, no return shipping, no conversation

One last thing, and then I will leave you alone
You cannot audit your own smell. Your nose adapts to you, so you are the last person in the room who can tell. That is also why it is so easy to sell a useless bar into this category.
So give it two weeks, then ask someone who will tell you the truth. A daughter, a husband, a sister. They will know before you do. Mine did, and she never said a word.
And whatever you decide about us, before you buy persimmon soap from anyone, run check number two. Turn the box over, see if what you are paying for is on the label at all, and then ask how much of it is in there.
