A small thing

Dead skin gets in the way.

Old skin sits on top of new skin. Wash straight over it and much of the persimmon never reaches you at all.

The sisal pouch lifts that layer while it lathers. The bar works on your skin, not on what is covering it.

And when the bar wears down to a sliver, it stays in the pouch and keeps working. Nothing goes down the drain.

The bar hangs to dry in the pouch, so it stops melting away in a wet dish.

Drop the bar straight in, pull the string, and wash with the pouch itself. Hang it up when you are done.
Why Kakiyu

The pouch is only as good as its bar.

Past 40, the skin makes a new oil called nonenal, and the oil is the smell. Water slides off it. So does most soap, which is why another shower changes nothing. Kakishibu cuts the grease, but only where it reaches the skin.

Kakishibu is the juice of unripe persimmons, pressed and left to ferment until it turns deep amber. Persimmons ripen once a year, so we press one harvest and wait for the next. The fruit ferments for months, by the traditional Japanese kakishibu method. Every bar is built on an extract certified at over 90% tannin, lot-tested.

When persimmon soap got popular, the copycats came fast. Opaque orange bars. Persimmon fragrance. Fragrance sits on top of the smell. Fermented fruit works on the oil itself. The pouch is here to make sure more of that fruit reaches your skin.

The Kakiyu ritual

The ritual, with the pouch.

1. Warm water. Bar in the pouch, string pulled. Work it to a full lather.

2. Wash slowly with the pouch itself. Let it reach the skin.

3. Rinse well. Hang the pouch to dry. Daily.

Hang it by the string, out of the dish, so the bar dries through.

Questions, answered

Everything else you want to know.

Is it rough on skin?
Sisal is firmer than a sponge and softer than a scrubbing brush. It softens after the first few washes. If your skin is sensitive, use a lighter hand for the first week.
Does the Kakiyu bar fit inside?
Yes. The pouch is sized for the 100 g bar, with room to spare as it wears down. It holds the last sliver too, so nothing is wasted.
How do I clean the pouch?
Rinse it and hang it up after each wash. Every couple of weeks, rinse it in hot water and let it dry all the way through.
How long does it last?
Sisal is a tough fiber. Rinse it and hang it to dry between washes and it lasts. When the weave goes limp and stops lifting, replace it.
Does it have a scent?
No fragrance is added. Sisal is an undyed plant fiber, so the only scent you will notice is the bar you put inside.
What if it does not work for me?
Use it for 60 days. If you are not happy, email us and we refund you in full.

I did not expect much from a bag. My bar used to turn to mush in the dish and now it does not.

Lathers far more than the bar does on its own. I use less soap and get more foam.

Cheap and it works. Bought two so there is one in each bathroom.

My skin feels smoother than it did with the bar alone. I did not buy it for that.

Easier to hold than a wet bar, which at my age matters more than it used to.
